Spring News from Jim Clark Photo

Posted: May 9th, 2011 @ 12:13pm

I've added a new gallery of images to the website:  Eastern Shore Spring 2011.  I had a great week of photographing a variety of shorebirds and beach scenes this past May.

The big news this spring is that Carson and I finally finished our second book in the Adventures of Buddy the Beaver series: “Mystery of the Missing Friends.” This book is about how Buddy learns about migration and hibernation. We are now waiting for the publisher to give the green light for getting it published.

On a sad note, I regret to inform everyone that the Great American Photography Weekend (GAPW) program has folded. I had been a member of GAPW’s faculty for ten years and I was saddened by the news, especially since I had already scheduled three workshops with them for 2011. It was a great nature photography workshop venue and I had a blast helping others get inspired and motivated in photographing nature.

I have not rescheduled the 2011 workshops I had listed on their website and I’m not sure if or when I’ll be doing so. Nevertheless, I still have a few workshops scheduled this year.

From May 20-23, I’ll be leading a nature photography workshop at the Marine Science Consortium – Wallops Island, Virginia. This workshop will be at the campus of the Marine Science Consortium. Price includes lodging and meals. Lodging is dormitory style and some meals will be at the campus cafeteria and others at nearby eating establishments. We’ll have classroom sessions on campus and then depart via bus to photograph at Assateague Island National Seashore and Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. This workshop includes one image critique session. I’ll also be doing a fall nature photography workshop for the consortium from November 9-13.

In August, Carson and I will once again be event photographers for the Defenders of Wildlife annual conservation workshop at the Yellowstone Institute in Lamar Valley, Yellowstone National Park. This will be our fifth time helping with the workshop! We not only photograph the event, but we serve as nature photography instructors for the folks. It is a fun time!

Immediately after this workshop, I will be spending a week just photographing in the park and then, from August 15-19, I’ll be leading a nature photography workshop in Yellowstone for Yellowstone Wolf Guides.

I also have two speaking engagements coming up this fall and in early spring of 2012.

The first is at University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio. On October 13, I’ll be guest speaker for the university’s annual Kershaw Lecture Series in Fine Arts. The university’s fine arts department will also host a month-long exhibit of my photography. On the same day as my keynote presentation, the university will host a gallery reception. If you are in the area, please consider coming by for the program. Would love to see ya!

I’ve been invited to speak at the annual conference of the National Camping Institute to be held next March 11-15, 2012 at Jackson's Mill, West Virginia. My program is sponsored by West Virginia University Extension Service. My presentation “My Child Son in the Woods” is scheduled for March 15. This is updated version of the program that my son Carson and I have done over the years about how to get young folks and their parents engaged in nature. It is based on an interview I had with Carson when he was eight years old. I will also be doing a one day nature photography seminar at the conference on March 14. Everyone is invited to attend the conference and if you are in the area, stop on by to say howdy!

Nikon selected two more of my images for their 2011 digital SLR guidebook.

I have some articles scheduled for Outdoor Photographer magazine this year, including profiles of nature photographers Wil Hershberger and Jerry Greer, and an article about photographing the autumn season.

Here’s to a great summer season for all of you!! Be safe out there…
